Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng is a powerful book. It tells the story of a mixed race family and the struggles of being the only non-white people in a neighborhood. It kicks off with the death of Lydia, the oldest child of the Lee family. Her death leaves the family in complete turmoil and begs the question, what happened to Lydia?
This is the first book I have read in a long time that features an Asian American cast. I had high hopes and Ng did not disappoint. She tackles the racism, isolation, and parenting. All of these problems that plague the Asian American community. This book held a mirror up to reality and reflected the ugly truths we choose to ignore.
I won’t reveal much more. I hope others would read this book because I highly recommend it. This is a very good novel for Asian American youth. It has been a long time since I saw myself in a book I read. This is something I want other Asian people to see, especially if they feel the same way. This was actually Celeste Ng’s debut novel and I look forward to seeing more of her work.
